Today it was announced that Neil Patrick Harris, most famous for his four-time Emmy-nominated portrayal of Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother and playing the titular character in Doogie Howzer, M.D., is going to be the host of the 85th Academy Awards. He is a talented actor and a wonderful showman as he hosted the Tony Awards before and has a career on the stage.

This of course is kind of not really a surprise since he has a supporting role in Gone Girl this year, a film that is highly in Oscar contention ever since it has been released. Also, ever since doubling down on the unconventional choice of Seth MacFarlane being host at the telecast two years ago, the Oscars definitely seem to be playing it safe since then, what with Ellen DeGeneres hosting the previous year and had hosted again previously back in 2007 to strong reviews. Again, with Harris being the host of the Tony Awards for several years now, it seems to me that the Oscars don't want another potential "stinker" like MacFarlane to happen again (though I thought MacFarlane did a pretty decent job hosting the ceremony). Needless to say, he is an interesting choice and will probably most certainly make this telecast a fun one, especially since they will likely give him an elaborate musical number a la "It's Not Just for Gays Anymore" at the 65th Tony Awards.
